MariaDB History
MariaDB got its start in 2009 as a fork of the database solution MySQL. A major reason for the creation of MariaDB was because of the concern regarding the acquisition of MySQL by Oracle. The goal of MariaDB was to remain compatability with MySQL as a drop-in replacement, while adding additional features like Aria, MyRocks and ColumnStore storage engines. The lead developer and CTO of MariaDB was Michael Widenius, who was MySQL’s founder. He named the database after his second daughter, while also launching the company Monty Program AB. In 2012, the MariaDB foundation was launched to help prevent an acquisition much like what happened with MySQL.
