Biological name : Nyctanthes arbor-tristis
( The other common names are Parijat or hengra bubar or Shiuli is a species of Nyctanthes native to South Asia and Southeast Asia.)
The tree is sometimes called the "tree of sorrow", because the flowers lose their brightness during daytime; the scientific name arbor-tristis also means "sad tree". The flowers can be used as a source of yellow dye for clothing. The flower is called Gangaseuli and some where Jharaa sephali in Odisha, India. In the Borok Tipruri culture of Tripura, it is associated with the cycle of life i.e. birth and dying. It is popularly used as a garland for the dead.
Uses of flower :
1) Medical uses :
The leaves have been used in Ayurvedic medicine and Homoeopathy for sciatica, arthritis, and fevers, and as a laxative. The flowers contain an abundance of mannitol and are emmenagogue. They are used medicinally to provoke menstruation.
2) Material uses :
The dye is nyctanthin, which is allied to crocetin as found in saffron (Crocus sativus L.)
An insecticidal effect of an extract of the shade-dried leaves has been reported.The bark may be used as a tanning material.The leaves are sometimes used for polishing wood and ivory.
